Phil Hellmuth: just a modest guy

Listening to Phil Hellmut, you would clearly understand that he thinks of himself as the greatest poker player ever. The word “modesty” is probably not in his vocabulary. But by judging by his collection of WSOP bracelets, one would have to recognize that he has good reason to be proud of himself. Phil Hellmut currently has 11 bracelets. Two years ago he broke the record of his competitors, Johnny Chan and Doyle Brunson, who both have 10 bracelets. His tournament earnings are also impressive. With approximately $10,9 Million, he is the fourth player to ever win this amount of money in tournaments.

Hellmuths Career

His career began with a victory in the Main Event in 1989. He was 24 years old and the youngest player to ever win the Main Event. (Today this record is held by Peter Eastgate, who won the Main Event in 2008. He was 22 years old.) Phil Hellmut became very famous in the poker world, not only for his success, but also for his defeats. Phil can get very angry, when he loses, sometimes cursing at his opponents (some good examples are featured here). This is why Phil Hellmut is one of the most entertaining players to watch. All his poker pro friends know now that this is a part of his character, and his sponsors love it because it makes it easier to sell his image.

Phil Hellmut is either loved or hated, but one thing is sure: he cannot be ignored!
